Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch” and Paul Kidby’s interpretation for the cover of Terry Pratchett’s book Night Watch.

I still consider Night Watch to be one of Terry Pratchett’s best and most thoughtful works.  A departure from the usual light-hearted tone, Night Watch is a character study of the weary and fury-plagued Sam Vimes, one of my all-time favorites.  Sometimes there are no happy endings, and sometimes death is inevitable however much we want to change the past, but that doesn’t mean you let your city go to the dogs.  You have to keep hope alive.
